We are in a country where policy maker don’t consider
possible outcome of the policy they formulated, at time the benefit lies on
what they wanted to achieved not the populace. Few years back NCC introduced Compulsory
SIM Registration in which user Data will be captured including Photograph and
biometric.
That time I was expected that the Data captured would be
enough for a user to do his/her SIM Card Welcome Back, but that is hopeless
expectation. Not until I lost a MTN SIM
(that has undergone 2x welcome) and I don’t
have the Sim pack as well. Getting to MTN office and claim I was the owner and
the SIM was registered with my Data but explanation not help. I had to let go. Immediately
aware that my Facebook, Gmail, GTbank Account will be compromise if I don’t
update those account with new Phone Number, I did that ASAP.
Last week I got a new Airtel Number, but that evening I got
a message from Facebook that "Omo has updated her status..." I feel robbed;
I have been sold Second hand SIM.
Out of curiosity I went ahead to recover the bonus
Follow-Come Facebook Account that came with the sim, and I did that
successfully with the new Airtel Number.
The Point is why can’t user be allowed to do Welcome Back
with their Captured Data, "We have been robbed of our Privacy". If a
user is not aware that Loosing a SIM card can pose Security treat to his life
and failed to Recover his SIM Number, NCC and Network Operators should be
blamed because they failed to properly advertise the Security treat attached to
loosing one phone number, also Network Operators should take full responsibility
of securing their users, by the way why, sell someone property to another in
the first place.
The case in this write up relate to Nigerian
